Hello everyone, welcome to todayโs skincare video. I will be showing you my Basic Japanese Skincare Routine, only 3 steps so it is effective and quick. The products I am highlighting are the, Senka Face Wash and Hada Labo Lotion which can be used both AM + PM. I will also talk a little about slugging and how I use Vaseline in my routine at night.
How to create a skincare routine?
So, I have official branched into the J-beauty scene with this basic routine. These are my first Japanese skincare products and they have not been a disappointment. I know that creating a skincare routine can be so overwhelming, so the best way is to start small with the necessities.
I say this all time, A basic skincare routine can transform your skin and when you use good products you have a great foundation for healthy skin. In the morning, it is cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen. At night time a cleanser and a thick moisturiser is enough. Then everything else you add such as toner, essence and mask work better.
My skin without any product, it has really come a long way!
Alright, to build my J-beauty skincare, the first product I reached for was a sunscreen, and now I have added this cleanser and lotion. Today, I will show you my night time routine which also includes slugging with Vaseline.
Cleanser checklist: Cleans effectively, Clears pores & Low pH
Firstly, I go in with the Senka Perfect Whip Face Wash
This product is actually designed to foam up, one of its main selling points as it can be really cool and aesthetic. If you have a beauty net it makes the process super easy. But if you do not, like me it means having to lather it in your hands a for a few minutes to get some kind of foam. I am too lazy to do that, so I basically just use this like a normal cleanser. I wet my face and work it into my skin gently.
The Senka Perfect Whip, is rich and creamy in texture, it penetrates deep into the pores to thoroughly remove dirt, oil/excess sebum, sweat, sunscreen and other impurities. It effectively cleans my skin even without double cleansing with an oil first. The Senka face wash is not harsh on the skin, it does not leave it feeling stripped of moisture after. It is able to do this because it has naturally derived silk essence that protects and softens the skin, double hyaluronic acid to ensure the skin barrier is protected and moisture is restored after cleansing, and Shiseidoโs unique Aqua-in-Pool formulation that strengthens the skin barriers against day-to-day damage.
The Senka Perfect Whip Face Wash is known to be the No.1 best-selling Japanese face wash for the past decade, and is considered a holy grail for many. And I can understand why people like using it. For me it has been a great go to face wash, something I can use everyday. I know it wonโt disturb my sensitive skin, the product is light and absorbs well to clean dirt and impurities. And after I use if my skin feels prepared and for the next steps in my skincare, as I feel clean, refreshed and smooth.
Terminology
After cleansing the next steps in your skincare should be about hydrating and moisturising the skin. Your skin type, whether it is normal, oily, dry, combination or sensitive is important to know as it can help you consider products that work to meet your needs. For example, I have dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin overall, by my forehead is oily. So I especially need a lot of hydrating and moisturising products.
Simply put, Hydrating is about adding water to the skin and Moisturising is about forming a barrier over the skinโs surface. You need both to keep you skin smooth and soft because if you just add water without sealing it in, the water evaporates over time.
For my skin type because it is Dehydrated and Dry, it lacks water so it needs to be hydrated, and lacks oil so it needs to be moisturised.
Toner checklist: Creates the environment that will maximise skincare
Next step in my skincare is to use the Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion
There are two types available, I have the moist version because I need that extra hydration.
The Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion, is loved by many Japanese people because of its affordability and effectiveness. Price point is something I consider when skincare shopping, if a product has great ingredients and is also budget friendly I add that into my basket ASAP.
The Hada Labo HA Lotion, is lightweight, and watery absorbing into the skin quickly. It is little thicker than a regular toner, having that smooth essence feel, it could work as a last step for those with normal or combination skin. The Super star main ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid. In addition The Hada Labo HA Lotion also contains 3 different kinds of HA, Super Hyaluronic Acid, Nanodiode Hyaluronic Acid and Fermented Hyaluronic Acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin that keeps the skin moisturized, smooth and firm. Hyaluronic acid has the property of attracting and retaining a large quantity of water (up to 1000 times its weight in water). This ability, gives volume and elasticity to the skin. Over time, the skinโs hyaluronic acid level decreases and it causes the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and loss of firmness.
This Hada Labo HA Lotion works well for me to because it is good for all skin types to achieve the maximum capacity of moisture and hydration. It improve barrier function, as dry and irritated skin hardens the skin barrier. My skin feels smoother and bouncy when I use it. And it is a gentle lotion, fragrance free, colorless, alcohol free, oil free, so it is good for my sensitive skin.
Moisturiser checklist: Lightweight, Not greasy & Long lasting
At night time only, the last step is to go in with Vaseline Cocoa Butter Moisturising Jelly aka Slugging
What is Slugging?
Slugging simply means slathering your face with petroleum jelly as the last step of your evening skin-care routine. It leaves your face as slimy as slug mucus (hence the name). Slugging is good for your skin, to prevent water loss and dryness.
Slugging itself isnโt hydrating, it does not add anything to your skin, but seals in the moisturising products you applied.
Do you need to apply so much jelly?
Now, when you watch all these tiktoks, they use a lot on their faces. Thatโs fine. However, I do not use that much because my skin does not like it and so use a little amount and I still feel the effects. Also, I no longer apply it on my forehead like I did when I filmed this video. As I mentioned earlier forehead is more oily, so I found I was breaking out a little there.
Vaseline Cooca Butter Moisturising Jelly is ideal for dull and dry skin, it can also smooth scars, wrinkles, and other marks on the skin. The petroleum jelly locks in skins natural moisture to help heal dry skin. The cocoa butter has a mild chocolatey fragrance. Cocoa Butter is known to naturally nourish skin. Using Vaseline is super adorable and it is well tested, gentle for the skin and does not clog pores.
I have been slugging to get more of a healthy natural glow, my skin was going through a phase and looking dull and this was an easy way to help prevent the dryness and retain moisture.
Sunscreen checklist: UVA & UVB protection, No white cast, Not Greasy & No Breakouts from it
While in the morning, my last step with be the Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF 50+ PA++++
The Canmake Sunscreen is a powerful high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen that has both physical and chemical filters. A chemical hybrid physical sunscreen is getting the best of both worlds when in comes to ingredients; with 5 of the most effective and photostable sun filters Octinoxate, Uvinul A Plus, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Tinosorb S.
UV radiation is present every day of the year. We need to protect our skin daily from the damaging UV rays by making sure sunscreen is apart of every skincare routine. UVB rays cause sunburn, but UVA rays can penetrate the deeper layers of our skin, creating sun damage and ageing. And that is why you need a sunscreen that offers both forms of protection.
I have the Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel Clear, there are two other options. The clear version is the ideal one to get if you want to avoid having a white cast. This Mermaid sunscreen has a smooth gel/ watery texture, it is not rough or sticky and it is very light and refreshing adsorbing into the skin well like a lotion. I have not gotten any break outs from the sunscreen and I have been reaching for it regularly because it is so moisturising.
The sunscreen is alcohol-free, fragrance & essential oil-free and is recommended for all skin types and skin tones.
That concludes this Basic Japanese routine. All products are listened in the description box available on YesStyle. Use my YesStyle Code and Link to get 5-10% off your purchases. These products have been my go to me right now. I am at the point in my skincare journey where I am able to keep products to a minimal, because I am just focusing on maintenance and health. I very much love my long routines, but sometimes basic and quick is what I have time for or what my skin needs. I am still not able to say my skin is clear just because I drink water lol. And so it is helpful for me to have simple products with good ingredients that treat some of my main skincare concerns; dullness and dryness.

Thank you for such an in depth post on Slugging! I have been intrigued by it seeing it on TikTok, but my skin is oily so I have been worried it will break me out. But your tips have made me want to give it a go!
