I am currently reading Quiet. It is taking me sometime to get through this book, however I am learning many things about the way society is structured. As someone who has always identified themselves as an introvert and never felt like I fit in, this book is challenging me to also see what I have done to survive and what I can do to stretch myself more.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking
Cain included some parts of this letter in her book, and it has become one of my favourite things to say. The ultimate way to say no politely when invited to a social gathering. I told people I never go out, I don’t want to look like I am lying so I cannot come.
“My dear Mr. Babbage
I am very much obliged to you for sending me cards for your parties, but I am afraid of accepting them, for I should meet some people there, to whom I have sworn by all the saints in Heaven, I never go out, & should, therefore, be ashamed to meet them.— I assure you I feel very grateful for your kindness to me.

The book talks about classroom bubbles and open offices, the environments we are told to work in does not favour independent or private space. Society is pushing everyone into the ideal persona. The anxiety I felt in some of these situations, that I had to repress and push back because everyone else was coping fine so I had to as well.
There is so much more of the book left, and it is really helping me deal with this season that I am in. I feel like I have to stop running from the silence. Right now there is something I need to do, and it can’t be done with distractions. I have learnt to be loud, but now I have to be quiet once more to get work done.
