Hello everyone, welcome to todayâs Skincare & Me video. This is Testing New Products Part 2.
I show you my process with how I test new skincare products and get them comfortable with my skin. Today, I will be using the Beauty of Joseon and sharing some 5 tips to creating an effective skincare routine.
Have Stable Go Toâs
I like to introduce new products alongside my stable ones. So,
My first tip is to have stable go to products that you can reply on no matter the season. When I say season I mean literal weather change, but also the different phases your skin goes through and the skin care concerns. For me I have chosen my most gentle and non irritating products, that I know will work each time. My absolute favourite cleanser is the COSRX Low pH Gel. For example the day before my eyes started flaring up a little, since my eye infection they have become so sensitive. I knew that the best cleanser right now was the COSRX, I could trust that it would not make my eyes worse. I avoid putting product around my eye area except for a cleaner to at least keep it clean. Some of my other favourites that I rely on is the COSRX snail essence and the Klairs Midnight Blue. The snail mucin is good for healing, and like the name says the Klairs effectively calms my skin down. Any time I feel flares, irritations, redness or any other type of sensitivity these are some of the main products I reach for.
Make Skincare An Experience
My next tip is to allow skincare to be an experience, by having little intentions behind it. For example, when you massage your face at any point from cleaning to applying moisturiser have in you mind that you are releasing tension. At night, I grind my teeth while I sleep so I used have pain around my ears. It wasnât until 1) I recently got a night guard and 2) I started doing jaw massages that the pain went away. After I do my jaw massages my face and head would feel so light and relaxed. So I have been doing some jaw massages during my skincare. This now allows my skincare to be something that makes my skin look good but also release tension. I was aware that many people did face massages, but I thought it was only about trying to make your face not look bloated.
Another thing I enjoy doing is listening to music while I do my routine, sometimes when I am in rush or not in the mood I forget. However, I intentionally try to do it as much as I can because it makes skincare a little more fun if you are having a karaoke session. I hype myself up through my playlist and when I finish my routine I feel good on the inside and out.
Learn About Skincare
And next tip is that you should actively try to learn about skincare, from what your corners are and how to treat them, also knowing the ingredients in products, as well as understanding some basic terminology. When starting out with skincare it can feel so overwhelming because of all the option out there, and you donât know whatâs best for you. So, to help with that the first thing you can do learn what your skin type is. Your skin type, whether it is normal, oily, dry, combination or sensitive is important to know as it can help you consider products that work to meet your needs and allow you to narrow down your search.
After that, understanding some key words that come up in products is a good idea so you know why they something will benefit you. For example Hydrate and Moisture, you see these words a lot on many products. Simply put, Hydrating is about adding water to the skin and Moisturising is about forming a barrier over the skinâs surface. You need both to keep you skin smooth and soft because if you just add water without sealing it in, the water evaporates over time. I am always looking for both hydrating and moisturising products for my skin type because it is Dehydrated and Dry, it lacks water so it needs to be hydrated, and lacks oil so it needs to be moisturised.
Monitor Progress
My next tip is to monitor your progress and know whether a product works well for you. I do not look for drastic changes overnight, skincare takes time and it is best to see its performance long term. In order for me to not over analyse in the meantime while I wait for results I created some checklists. If at the start of using a product it can at least deliver on some basic things I am able to consider it works for now. However, if it does not tick everything on the list it also does not mean I discard it, as long as it does most things itâs fine. I keep my checklist very simple.
Cleanser checklist: Cleans effectively, Clears pores & Low pH
Moisturiser checklist: Lightweight, Not greasy & Long lasting
Sunscreen checklist: UVA & UVB protection, No white cast, Not Greasy & No Breakouts from it
These are the main products in a basic skincare routine, but I also heavily rely on toners so I created a simple one for them.
Toner checklist: Creates the environment that will maximise skincare
By this, I mean look out for special ingredients that will treat one of my skincare concerns.
Over time if you are using good products you will notice, your skin will have a healthy glow, skincare concerns will be treated, elasticity will improve, skin tone will begin to even out, and overall it will feel nourished. To know if your skincare routine is working there has to be a difference for the better, and if you do not see one then it is time to change things around.
Try New Products Regularly, but Slowly
Which leads me to my last tip, try new products regularly, but take your time with them, it is always best to introduce products slowly. My rule for myself is maximum 2 new at a time, so with Beauty of Joseon I started using the glow serum the week before, so that when I added the balm and sunscreen I am following my rule of 2. Sometimes your skin gets used to products, and shaking things up a little will help give it that revival. It is also good to have products for different seasons, for example in summer I use more gel moisturisers. Plus like I said earlier it can be able the experience, it is simply fun to smell new products and feel it tingle on your skin.
